1 - Tip Weevil
A very common problem in Summit and Wasatch Counties on Spruce Trees
Tip Weevil attacks the tips of Spruce in April or May and must be treated every Spring and Fall to prevent damage. Left untreated, you will lose 1 – 2 feet of the tree every year.
2 - Aphids and other sucking insects
A very common problem on most trees in Northern Utah
Aphids are the most common sucking insect we have here in Utah. They live off of the cell tissue in leaves rendering the tree unable to Photosynthesize and produce necessary sugars for its survival. They also leave behind “Honey Dew” and if you ever parked your car under a tree and found it sticky in the morning, you have these guys to thank!
3 - Scale
An insect that attaches itself directly to the leaf or bark of a tree
Scale is a very difficult insect to control and treatment must be timed around the “Crawler” stage. Successful treatments are usually good for 2-3 years
4 - Mites
An Arachnid that sucks the cell tissue from leaves disabling the Photosynthesis process – See Here…
Mites can be tricky to control as they are not Insects, but Arachnids, and need to be treated differently. They can be treated any time there is a presence.
5 - Disease
There are many types of Fungal and Bacterial Pathogens that interfere with, or stop completely, the Photosynthesis process.
Depending on the time of year and and the tree, it can have a “Powdery Mildew” covering the leaf, or a “Blight” that cause whole branches to die. “Anthracnose” can infect and decline entire groves of Oak or Sycamore.
5 - Borers
Many types of Boring Insects are common in the Northern Utah region – See here…
Boring Beetles “Drill” into the bark of a tree and begin to eat the very layer that moves nutrients up and down the vascular system of the tree, killing the tree in a very short time. Once infested there is little that can be done to save the tree. However the surrounding trees will need to be treated to protect them from future generations.
